Obesity and the Rising Costs of Healthcare

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Many parents are concerned about the dramatic increase in cases of childhood obesity from previous years. It is true that in the last 30 years, childhood obesity has more than tripled from comprising 5% of the 6-11 year old population to now reaching closer to 20%. Parents are especially weary of obesity because of the current economy and the rising costs of healthcare. There is definitely reason to be concerned; however, obesity is a perfectly preventable condition.

The main reason for the concern about childhood obesity comes from the dangerous health conditions it has been linked to. Obese children are much more likely to be diagnosed with conditions like type 2 diabetes, asthma, sleep apnea, and social disorders like anxiety and depression. Obesity in childhood can also lead to adverse health effects later in life like heart attack and stroke.

And though these health problems are increasingly present in children, obesity is not always an easy condition to identify. Obesity is not a condition that can be distinguished by sight alone like many believe it to be. Especially with children, who have various different body types and often gain and lose weight due to hormonal changes in growth, obesity should be diagnosed only by a qualified professional. In order to determine if a child is obese, it is necessary to calculate the child’s Body Mass Index or BMI. A BMI is calculated using a child’s age and weight and is compared to the normal weight for a child at that age. If the child’s BMI is much higher than what is normal, the child is overweight or obese.

However, even a child that is obese is not immediately at risk of poor health. A doctor must check the child’s genetic history, his/her individual growth over time, as well as his/her eating habits to determine what risks may be present. As mentioned, there are many different body types, so a kid who has extra body fat may not have a high blood pressure or high cholesterol (the real cause of many associated health conditions). If you are a parent who is concerned about your child’s weight and health, consult your doctor to find out if the child is at risk.

In order to avoid the stress of countless doctors visits and the cost of healthcare, do what you can to ensure your children grow up healthy. Encourage your child to eat healthy foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Teach your child about the many vitamins and minerals found in foods and why they are important for the body’s health. This way, your child will be able to make his/her own decisions about what to eat.

Another good way to encourage healthy eating is to avoid fatty and sugary foods. Try to spend more time eating healthy meals together as a family rather than going to fast food restaurants. And also encourage your kids to be active. One of the best ways to prevent childhood obesity is to spend time playing outside or doing activities like sports or gymnastics. Be a little more health conscious and it will do a lot to lessen your child’s risk of obesity.

Best Abdominal Exercise to Burn Belly Fat

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

With the millions of exercises and exercise equipment that was made to target a persons abdominal muscles there has to be one exercise that works the best to burn belly fat, and there is. The best exercise to burn belly fat only works the best if it is done properly and that is what I am going to tell you about today.

The best exercise to burn belly fat is none other than the bicycle crunch. If you ever read my website you will hear me talking about the bicycle crunch all the time and the reason I talk about the bicycle crunch all the time is because I believe it is the best exercise that has ever been done. This exercise is more than just working your abs, if you pick up the pace a bit and keep your legs driving parallel to the floor you will get a great ab workout and you will get a great aerobic workout.

The one thing you need to remember when doing the bicycle crunch is to do them on a flat surface. If you try doing this exercise while having a pillow or pad under you to keep your legs up then you are not getting a full workout and you will need to either do more or remove the pillow or pad. The best part about this exercise and why I recommend it so much is simply because not very many people do it when they should.

Not too long ago I had a big belly although I did have abs and every other muscle in my body was ripped, but it was always my abs that were not looking right. I spent 1 month doing 200 bicycle crunches per day just to get the abdominal workout and the cardio that I got out of that exercise. In less than 1 month I lost over 60 pounds and now my body is more ripped and I can finally feel proud of my abs.

5 Fat Burning Foods You Should Eat to Lose Weight Fast

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The food that you eat has a tremendous effect on how quickly or slowly you can lose weight. In this article I want to share with you 5 foods that burn fat or, to put it more accurately, help you to burn more fat faster than ever. When you’ll see what these foods are, you’ll be able to burn off body fat much faster than ever before.

While food doesn’t burn fat by itself, there are foods that help the body to burn more calories faster or to not consume so many calories. Either way, these foods help you to create the calorie deficit necessary for weight loss.

So, what are these 5 foods? Here they are now:

1. Low fat dairy – A study which was conducted in Europe found an interesting thing about dairy and people who eat them. People who ate dairy on a regular basis were found to have more fat in their bodily discharge. Their body got rid of more fat, naturally. This may amount to a few pounds annually, so it can be quite effective.

2. Eggs – This super healthy source of protein is an excellent fat burning food for two reasons: the protein that it contains helps to build muscle tissue which boosts your metabolism and that same protein also helps you to feel full for a long time and so acts as an appetite suppressant.

3. Red Chillies – This food has a short term metabolism boosting effect. It contains capsaicin which is a substance that was found to produce a short increase in your metabolic rate, leading to accelerated calorie burning.

4. Oatmeal is often considered a boring food. This is tragic as it has many helpful qualities. One of these qualities is that oatmeal helps the body regulate its insulin level and so reduces the storage of fat. In addition, oatmeal is rich in fiber and can help you remain full and satiated for hours. It’s an excellent way to delay hunger and avoid overeating.

5. Apples are a surprising food that seems to help people lose weight faster. It may be due to the pectin in apples, a substance that is known for its beneficial anti-fat properties. There is research that shows that eating apple may help you shed weight faster.

Now that you know these fat burning foods, it’s time to include them in your diet. Don’t overeat them and don’t make them your sole food. Just include them for better results.
