There is no question that the obesity rate in the United States is rapidly rising, and many people are beginning to question why our society is getting fatter and fatter. There are definitely many factors to consider, but the main 2 factors that I would like to explore today are: eating habits and exercise.

Before we look at those 2 factors, it is important to understand why obesity or morbid obesity is really a problem. Many people mistakenly think that the only problem with obesity is that you look fat– but that is the least of an obese person’s problems. Sure, these people do not enjoy being fat because of the how others view them, but the real problem lies in their overall health.

Studies have shown that when a person is obese they are more likely to have diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and other life-threatening ailments. Additionally, their joints are weakened, they have less energy, and there are many other diseases and problems that happen as a result of obesity.

But, if you are obese, do not worry because you can change your life! Take a good look at your eating habits and your fitness levels… most likely you have some changes that can be made.

One of the factors that can contribute to obesity is the fact that many people are focusing their eating on the processed foods that contain empty calories. It is a vicious cycle, because people eat these foods that are void of the nutrients that their bodies need… so they are still hungry after they eat. Which means that they will likely eat more low-nutrient foods that will not provide them the vitamins and minerals their body really needs. They continue to consume more calories because they are not feeling satisfied– their body is not getting what it needs to be healthy.

The 2nd obesity factor to explore is physical activity, because as people get more overweight they may inclined to exercise less for 1 main reason: their body hurts! Joints may be sore, and it really is harder to exercise when you are carrying around so much excess weight.
